Our Climate is Changing, Are We Changing with It?
By Harriet Simms
Scientists agree that our planet is getting hotter. Why then, would it appear that our political spearheads disagree?
Whilst working a part-time job five years ago, I grew increasingly concerned with the amount of single-use plastic that was thrown away rather than being recycled. This encouraged me to research what was being done to combat the unsustainable disposal of mass plastic packaging. I was inspired to find out how both council and locals can implement a better system in workplaces and cut down plastic consumption.
Since then, what national changes have been executed to fight climate change? In the Summer of 2019, the British Government finally declared a climate change emergency. Whilst to some this was considered progressive and in-fact overdue, a crucial question was left hanging in the air: what actions for the cause have been enforced since? Despite being categorised as an emergency, there has been no immediate parliamentary action. Yet again, the Earth’s declining health has sadly been pushed aside.
In the face of adversity, many across the globe have rightly taken matters into their own hands. We now have collective forces of change such as 'Extinction Rebellion' who carry out mass peaceful protests in the streets with an artistic flair.
There are also prominent rising young figures such as Greta Thunberg campaigning for global awareness on the crisis.
Nationally, we have tireless attempts of directly lobbying our MPs to comprehend that parliament buildings and status will not protect anyone, even them, from the lethal effects of climate change.
Whilst there are efforts being made for climate change around the globe, we can also make impactful contributions to the cause on a local scale so that future generations can thrive in protected environments. Ask yourself, as Leicester citizens are we climate-conscious? Are we setting an example when it comes to environmental and sustainable matters? Can you recognize current projects and resources to improve the environment across Leicester?
The biggest question to ask yourself is: “What am I doing to positively contribute to a greener Leicester?”
If you’re struggling for an answer, look no further. Over time I have added small changes into my daily life to help the environment which you can do too! Analysing my consumption and avoiding the items I don’t really need helps me to make greener decisions. A plastic-free lifestyle that is consistent can make a huge difference. You can do this by shopping locally for fresh produce and switching to plastic-free alternatives such as beeswax food wraps, plastic-free toiletries, sustainable bamboo products and more. This could be an easy way for you to also make some environmentally friendly choices!
We are also fortunate in Leicester to have positive contributions towards our climate emergency through an engaging and active Green Party as well as the green-advocating Leicester City Council.
Leicester puts itself on the map as a continually growing and developing city. The Leicester City Council recognises this and more importantly, appreciates the climate emergency. With this in mind, the LCC supports advocating for greener choices in the hope of becoming a sustainable city. As a result, the publication of Leicester’s Green Infrastructure Policy has been introduced, listing 5 priorities in which civilian development and our natural climate can survive and thrive.
The policy identifies Leicester as a central hub for economic growth and means of transport. The priorities persist with an environmental duty to maintain biodiversity in lieu of which can result in Leicester naturally becoming a sustainable city.
The Green Party manifesto for environmental and social justice have long term goals that focus around climate change and pollution, equal education, housing and transport. Their manifesto surrounding all of these and many other social concerns are freely available on their website . Participation or recognition of these political suggestions is one easy way in which you can contribute to a greener Leicester. Whilst political involvement does not appeal to all, the universal goal of saving our planet should. So, regardless of your political alignments or the mistrust of those in suits, trust the facts. Your planet needs you.
Many other sustainable changes have already been put in place. This includes funding bus services to make the swap to electric buses, the installation of solar panels on council properties and the improvement of the ‘Connecting Leicester’ programme to continue transforming accessible cycling and walking routes. So, why not make use of Leicester’s scenic walking routes or try out one of the many electric buses on your daily errands instead of driving? You can reduce your carbon footprint by shopping locally which will also support the small businesses and local shops that may have struggled during the pandemic.
Being environmentally conscious is not a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Even if we can’t make a change on a huge scale, there are plenty of small and personal choices we can make to do our part for the planet. In the words of Greta Thurnberg, “You are never too small to make a difference.”
